\nAbout the Direct
\nPayment Holder
\nS is starting a nursing degree at Anglia Ruskin University in
\nSeptember and will be living independently in student
\naccommodation for the first time. She is a capable,
\nhardworking and determined young woman who manages a
\ngreat deal on her own, but she is autistic, has a mild learning
\ndifficulty, and a communication disorder.
\nS enjoys swimming, which she does weekly, and she is warm
\nand sociable once she feels comfortable. She would also like to
\ngo to gym and play badminton. She is genuinely interested in
\nhealthcare and caring for people, which is what drew her to
\nnursing. She likes routine and familiar activities, and she is
\nkeen to try new things and build her social life at university
\nwith a bit of encouragement.
\nHours and rate of
\npay hours
\n10 to 14 hours per week to start, increasing during clinical
\nplacement periods @ \u00a320 per hour. Hours built around
\ntimetable but mainly weekday evenings & weekends.

\nWhat you would
\nbe doing\u2026
\nS is independent with her own personal care and, when she
\nhas a fixed routine such as classes, gets herself up and out
\nwithout difficulty. Her support needs are around prompting,
\nplanning and organisation, travel, and staying safe. She takes
\nlonger to process complex or unfamiliar information, can find it
\nhard to speak up or ask for help under pressure, and benefits
\nfrom structure, gentle encouragement, and a consistent,
\ntrusted person.
\nA regular check-in and gentle prompts to keep her day and
\nweek on track. Help to plan and organise her week and stay on
\ntop of coursework and deadlines. Meals: planning, shopping,
\ncooking together, and reminders to eat and drink regularly.
\nEveryday living: laundry, keeping her space in order, and
\nmanaging money. Travel: building her confidence to get
\naround, and getting to and from university and her clinical
\nplacements, including early starts and late finishes. Confidence
\nand community: trying new things, social activities, and settling
\ninto new situations. Encouragement on the days she finds
\nharder. The aim throughout is to help her do things for herself,
\nnot to do them for her.
\nShe needs the right person alongside her to help her stay
\norganised, keep to a routine, and grow in confidence. This role
\nwill enable her to live independently, thrive on her course,
\ntravel safely to her placements, and build the skills and
\nconfidence to manage adult life. Her family are relocating
\nabroad, so this consistent support will become the mainstay of
\nher independence.
\nThis is a permanent, ongoing role. We are looking for someone
\nwho would like to build a lasting working relationship with
\nSahana and support her throughout her studies and beyond.
\nRequired skills
\nand experience
\nA full driving licence and use of a car is highly desirable but
\nnot essential.
\nPatience, kindness, reliability and consistency above all, as
\ntrust and continuity matter enormously to S. A calm, clear
\ncommunicator who is happy to explain things in a way that
\nworks for her and to encourage rather than take over. Someone
\nwho promotes her independence by helping her do things for
\nherself. Good time-keeping and dependability. Experience of
\nsupporting an autistic person or someone with a learning
\ndisability is welcome, but genuine understanding, patience and
\na willingness to learn matter most. A positive attitude and a
\ngood sense of humour.
\nNo specific additional training is required beyond the
\nmandatory safeguarding, first aid and health and safety. An
\nunderstanding of autism and learning disabilities, or a
\nwillingness to learn about them, would be valuable. A short
\ninduction and time to get to know S before the role begins
\nwould be part of the arrangement.
\nS is genuinely excited to be starting her nursing degree, and is
\nlooking for someone to be alongside her as she take this big
\nstep into living independently for the first time. This is not a
\nheavy care role. It is much more about encouragement,
\nstructure, and being a steady, friendly presence, the kind of
\ncheck-in and support a family gives, tuned to the fact that she
\nis autistic , has a mild learning difficulty and Speech and
\nlanguage communication disorder.
