What you would be doing… The role is focused on supporting and enabling rather than doing tasks for her.

She experiences difficulties with processing and retaining information, planning, organisation and problem-solving. She can learn new skills but may need regular repetition, prompting and encouragement to maintain them.

She also has complex social and emotional needs and can experience misunderstandings when communication, language or cultural expectations are unfamiliar. The successful applicant will need to communicate clearly, check her understanding and provide support in a patient and respectful manner.

She can find unexpected or last-minute changes difficult and takes time to develop trust with new people. Consistency, reliability and following through on agreed plans are therefore particularly important.

•        Supporting with meal planning, food shopping and preparing meals.

•        Encouraging the development and maintenance of independent living skills.

•        Supporting with understanding and managing correspondence.

  •        Helping to plan weekly activities and ensuring appointments and commitments are remembered and attended.

•        Supporting with maintaining her tenancy, including keeping track of insurance, bills and payments.

•        Supporting travel training and developing confidence when accessing the local community.

•        Accompanying and supporting her with community activities where required.

•        Helping to identify solutions and appropriate coping strategies when she feels frustrated, overwhelmed or socially isolated.

•        Providing encouragement and motivation during periods of low mood or reduced confidence.

•        Supporting engagement in meaningful activities, including volunteering, employment opportunities and social activities.

•        Helping with planning, organisation, decision-making and problem-solving.

•        Encouraging independence, confidence and personal choice while providing appropriate guidance and support.

No personal care is required, and the role does not involve the use of a hoist.

The person I would like… The successful applicant will:

•        Be positive, energetic and passionate about supporting someone to achieve greater independence.

•        Be patient, understanding and respectful.

•        Have a fun personality and a good sense of humour.

•        Be reliable, punctual and consistent.

•        Understand the importance of keeping commitments and following through on agreed plans.

•        Be resilient and able to provide calm and consistent support during periods of frustration or fluctuating mood.

•        Be organised and able to support with planning, routines and appointments.

•        Be able to communicate clearly and check understanding rather than making assumptions.

•        Be proactive and confident using their own initiative.

•        Be self-motivated and able to identify opportunities to develop skills, confidence and independence.

•        Be willing to invest time in developing a positive and trusting working relationship.

•        Be able to provide encouragement and help the individual recognise her abilities and achievements.

Previous experience supporting individuals with autism, learning disabilities or similar needs would be beneficial but is not essential. The right attitude, reliability

and willingness to learn how best to work together are considered more important.
