Evidence from businesses, and their staff, highlights the ongoing fear of unintentionally offending disabled professionals by using the wrong language or etiquette. 1 out of 5 managers surveyed by Purple feared interviewing a disabled person due to fear of saying something wrong. Whilst most businesses provide generic equality and diversity training for line management staff and/or disability awareness training, these rarely come together in one place.
Businesses are also wary about the productivity of disabled employees with 45% surveyed by Purple worried that a disabled person wouldn’t be able to do the job required.
Purple has developed a half day training programme focused on managing disability and long-term health conditions in the workplace. The training programme is targeted at line managers working in the public and private sectors.
